  • 1 large egg Helps bind the ingredients together.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Enhances the flavor of the meat.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Season to your preference.
For the gravy
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For browning the patties.
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced Fresh mushrooms recommended for best flavor.
  • 1 large onion, sliced Adds sweetness to the gravy.
  • 2 cups beef broth Use low sodium if preferred.
  • 2 tablespoons flour To thicken the gravy.
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Adds umami flavor to the gravy.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides. Remove and set aside.
Cooking the Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and onions, cooking until softened.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to combine. Gradually add in beef broth and soy sauce, stirring until thickened.
  3. Return patties to the skillet, cover, and let simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Serving
  1. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Spoon extra gravy and mushrooms over the patties.

Notes

Do not overmix the meat; mix just until combined. Brown the patties well for better flavor. If gravy is too thin, let it simmer a few more minutes to thicken. Taste and adjust salt and pepper at the end. Use a meat thermometer if unsure; patties should reach 160°F (71°C). For storage, cool to room temperature, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
