Ingredients

For the filling
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste seasoning (salt, pepper, paprika) Adjust according to preference.
For the sandwich
  • 4 slices bread (sourdough or your choice) Can use rye, wheat, or Texas toast.
  • 4 slices cheese (cheddar or American) Can mix cheeses for flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For grilling the sandwich.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned.
  2. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic; sauté until softened.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
Cooking the Sandwich
  1. Heat another skillet on medium heat. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Place one slice butter-side down on the skillet, add cheese, a generous portion of the Sloppy Joe filling, and top with another slice of cheese and bread (butter-side up).
  3. Grill until golden brown and the cheese melts, flipping halfway through.
Serving
  1. Cut the sandwich in half and serve hot.

Notes

Drain extra fat from the cooked beef to avoid soggy bread. Cook on medium heat so cheese melts before bread burns. Don’t overfill; leave some edge so sandwiches seal while grilling.
