My Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour Spoon into the measuring cup and level off.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt Reduce to 1/4 teaspoon if using salted butter.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Use room temperature for even mixing.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar Dark brown sugar can be used for a deeper flavor.
  • 2 large eggs Use room temperature.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Mix-ins
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips Can substitute with white chocolate or butterscotch chips.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugars until smooth.
  4. Beat in the salt, vanilla extract, and eggs until well combined.
  5. Gradually blend in the flour mixture until just combined.
  6. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Baking
  1. Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  2. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until golden brown.
  3. Allow cookies to cool on the sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

Follow instructions in order. Do not overmix after adding flour to keep cookies soft. For chewier cookies, remove from oven at 9 minutes; for crunchier, bake closer to 11 minutes. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze for longer storage.
